These walls provide daily and weekly formats that dove-tail smoothly into all the core subjects by utilizing the highly-effective before, during, and after reading and writing instructional activities and strategies.
Hardcopy, Digital, Redeemable Serial Numbers
Before reading, learn how to frontload academic oral language, vocabulary knowledge, core concepts, and develop a deeper understanding of themes, morals, and traits. Additionally, implement the Word, Sentence, Dictionary activity to teach what good readers do when they encounter unknown vocabulary words.
Kick-off reading with the multi-sensory narrative or informational text structure chants, then adhere post-it notes directly to the text to identify those parts while reading. During reading, ensure high-levels of comprehension with the Read, Stop and Record, then React process that provides direct, explicit instruction to connect the text structure to the reading strategies that include monitoring, summarizing and clarifying, as well as visualizing, questioning, predicting, and making connections. Additionally, integrate close reading into this format for a thoughtful, critical analysis of an important part of the text.
Also, apply systematic and explicit steps for students to comprehend textbooks and take notes without copying! Use the Expo Stickman and Code-the-Text Bookmark to instantly identify the thesis, main ideas, and details in text.
After reading, think, talk, and write! Begin with concise summaries to check for understanding. Next, analyze the text by selecting from a menu of activities that connects to writing: Create Come Alive Boxes for character and setting analysis; Plan and write engaging narratives utilizing elements from the focus text; Identify important information learned to write informative/explanatory text that includes compare & contrast and cause & effect thinking structures; Develop mentor charts from the study of words and phrases embedded in texts; and utilize Build a Question to develop standardized questions. Finally, learn to form and write opinions that evaluate the text, backed by evidence and explanations.
