This Chapter outlines the unique “No Knowledge and Knowledge” format to develop academic language and informational writing skills integrated into the science and social studies curriculum. The “No Knowledge” activities introduce content vocabulary and background knowledge utilizing innovative written language techniques. These highly engaging methods include Lecture Notes, Content Vocabulary Diagrams, and Thinking Notes. The “Knowledge” activities include brainstorming and writing writing lessons.
The Brainstorming exercises develop rigor and critical thinking that directly link to the Informative/Explanatory Writing Lessons for Stages 3-8. Each writing stage begins with an introductory chant, followed by direct instruction steps for students to learn in order to plan and write their own information. These lessons teach all the elements and skills outlined in the Common Core Standards.
